Concentration Streams

Students may select one of the stream from seven Concentration Streams (CS). Each stream is designed to offer a structured set of elective courses around an organized theme within degree completion timeline. Concentrations are only available to civil engineering majors:

CS1-Structure

Structural engineering is considered as the brain of civil engineering. The concentration stream courses of structural engineering is concerned with the knowledge of applied mechanics, materials science and applied mathematics to perform analysis and design of various structures to support and resist self-weight and imposed loads. It also considers the technical, economic, environmental, aesthetic and social aspects of structures. The structures employed in civil infrastructure includes buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels, storage tanks, transmission line towers, in-ground structures and frameworks.

CS2 Geotechnical

Geotechnical engineering plays a key role in all civil engineering projects build on or in the ground. The concentration stream courses of Geotechnical engineering is concerned with the analysis, design and construction of foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, dams, tunnels, levees, wharves, landfills and other systems that are made of or are supported by soil or rock.

CS3 Transportation

Transportation engineering field exposes students to the process of alleviating transportation problems. The concentration stream of Transportation engineering deals with the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of safe and efficient transportation systems. These systems include roadways, railways, waterways, and intermodal operations. For example, the demand is the amount of traffic (people, cars, railcars, barges) that is expected to use a particular transportation facility, while the supply is the quantity and type of infrastructure components e.g. roadways, railway, bridges, pavements, etc.

CS4-Hydraulics

Hydraulic Engineering is a specialized field within civil engineering. The concentration stream courses of Hydraulic engineering involves the application of the principles of fluid mechanics to problems dealing with the collection, storage, control, transport, regulation, measurement, and use of water. This field mainly deals with the design of bridges, dams, channels, canals and levees.

CS5-Environment

The concentration stream of Environmental engineering, deals with the development of processes and infrastructure for the supply of water, the disposal of waste, and the control of pollution of all kinds. These endeavors protect public health by preventing disease transmission, and also preserve the quality of the environment by averting the contamination and degradation of air, water, and land resources.

CS6-Engineering Materials

Materials Science and Engineering is one the most important of the engineering disciplines as it impacts nearly all the traditional fields of engineering. The concentration stream of Material engineering, applies materials science to engineer improved construction materials to build our infrastructure. These materials traditionally include asphalt concrete, portland cement concrete, steel and fiber reinforced concrete, unbound and chemically bound aggregates, and chemically treated and stabilized soils in addition to that advance composite material.

CS7-Engineering Systems

The concentration stream of Engineering system combines engineering with perspectives from management, economics, and social science in order to address the design and development of complex, large-scale, sociotechnical systems that are so important in all aspects of modern society.
