NURETSS is envisioned to become hub of knowledge for creating, developing, implementing, promoting, transforming and exporting existing, emerging and future innovative railway technologies and skills of 3rd and 4th industrial revolutions in the 21st century. NURETSS is conceived as bastion of latest innovative railway and allied technologies based products, systems, manufacturing processes and services for ML-1, 2 & 3 CPEC projects in future.

NURETSS Objectives

National University of Technology (NUTECH) is the first Federally Chartered Technology University established to address industrial, economic and national issues affecting development and national growth of the country. NUTECH is envisioned to become an internationally acclaimed research university by producing ‘Solution Providers’ for the industry through the generation of specific technologies and skills at the national and international levels. In the context of pressing national issues one of the most significant challenges is that of developing and promoting upcoming innovative technologies, technical and vocational skills to support national organizations, Pak Railways and allied national industry in the face of upcoming CPEC based ML-1, 2 and 3 projects. NUTECH aspires to develop very strong intellectual, academic, research and skills support base for national allied industry and exports driven industrial enterprises to undertake railway development projects in line with the needs of emerging railway technologies of 21st Century to strengthen national economy. Pakistan’s future economic growth and competitiveness will increasingly depend on the extent to which it can support high value knowledge-based and technology driven allied industries. Keeping this in mind we foresee the following key short-term and long-term objectives of NURETSS.

Short-Term Objectives

NUTECH was established with the vision to fill the gap between academia and industry by establishing itself as the “University for Industry”. Recent extensive interactions with different railway organizations, national allied industries highlighted most immediate and urgent need of industry up-gradation through skilled and knowledgeable workforce to enable national allied industry support railways. Our allied national industry use technologies not intended for railways and there is absence of human resource capable of using the latest technologies to operate, maintain, manage and support railways.  The primary objective will be to train human resource for the national industry to develop products based on railway standards. NURETSS will offer different hi-tech professional certifications and develop railway industry-academia partnership. NURETSS will create and polish the skills of youth in such a way that they emerge as well qualified workforce for the industry to provide solutions to the problems of railways as well as develop allied national industry. Following are some of the short-term objectives of NURETSS:

  • Promoting positive attitudes to emerging technologies including railway technologies and encouraging youth to consider careers in this area.
  • Adding value to NURETSS through partnership with Pak Railways allied national industry, related international research institutions, R&D organizations, national and international higher education institutions.
  • Establishment of strong collaboration with well-established international universities doing research in emerging technologies of 4th Industrial Revolution including railways.

Facilitate trainings in railway operations, maintenance, technical and related professional skills for ML-1,2 and 3 projects thereby improving flow of high-quality skilled workforce. There will be gradual increase in the numbers railway based workforce taking NURETSS education and technical trainings. Ingenuity, creativity and problem solving skills will be provided as contributing towards economic recovery of railway on professional lines. Accordingly, high attainment levels in different skills related to railway operations, maintenance etc and allied industry development in related emerging technologies will be achieved through focussed certifications.

Long-Term Objectives

A few years after NURETSS has been meeting the expectations following long-term objectives are visualized:-

The education, research and professional training capabilities of NURETSS to create, develop and promote novel emerging technologies for application in railways will be increased and expanded by looking at the national railway and allied industry needs as well as the evolution of NURETSS-collaborator relationship. NURETSS will conduct R&D projects to upgrade the existing obsolescent railway technologies being used in-house.

International collaboration will primarily be R&D driven and will allow adoption of new technologies in order to contribute towards national and international railway and allied industry development. It will be in terms of system, design and development projects. By adapting international railway standards, NURETSS will develop national railway standards. Through these national allied enterprises will be transformed into value-added products based export-driven industry. By international collaboration with leading technology universities and railway industry internationally trained railway technology experts will be provided to train maximum youth become highly qualified and skilled workforce of the industry. For CPEC based railway ML-1, 2 and 3 projects, required industry experts, professionals and well trained workforce will be produced and made available for value addition to institutional efforts for strengthening national economy. Key long-term objectives are summarized as:

  • Develop and strengthen innovation, research and development capacity and capability with a focus on rapid national industrialization and commercialization of indigenously developed emerging technologies and their successful conversion into opportunities arising from research at NURETSS.
  • Attract world class research experts of emerging technologies of 4th Industrial Revolution to Pakistan to contribute towards developing systems and products for railway industry.
  • Make Pakistan the destination of choice for top entrepreneurs from South East Asia, Europe and beyond, ready to undertake joint railway and related systems development projects.
  • Transformation of systems to digital railway technologies driven one with new clean energy based technology industries effectively supporting railway maintenance, logistics, technical and financial services based on world clan standards and practices.
  • Advancement of emerging railway technologies led entrepreneurship and build on the strengths of CPEC economic zones, tourism, arts and culture through creativity and innovation.
