Dr. Jawaria Usman is an Assistant Professor at the European Union Center of Excellence for Climate Actions with ICT, within the Computer Engineering Department at the National University of Technology (NUTECH), Islamabad. With extensive experience in environmental research, academia, and project-based work, she holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, with a specialization in climate change, soil science, and carbon stock assessment. Her expertise includes environmental monitoring, spatial and temporal data analysis, and the use of analytical tools such as SPSS, XLSTAT, and ArcGIS to address complex environmental challenges.
Her research focuses on climate change dynamics, carbon sequestration, and environmental quality assessment, integrating field investigations, laboratory analysis, and data-driven methodologies. She has contributed to internationally recognized publications and has successfully led and implemented funded research projects, demonstrating strong capabilities in project design, execution, and scientific writing.
In addition to her research contributions, Dr. Usman is deeply committed to teaching and academic mentorship. She actively supervises students, contributes to curriculum development, and promotes critical thinking and practical skill development. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world environmental applications, preparing students to effectively address contemporary sustainability and climate challenges.
- Assistant Professor, European Union Center of Excellence for Climate Actions with ICT, Computer Engineering Department, National University of Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan (Present): Leads teaching and research initiatives as an Assistant Professor, supervises students and contribute to curriculum development. Responsible for guiding research projects, mentoring students, and supporting academic programs to ensure high-quality educational outcomes.
- Small Grant Awardee 2021 (Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene) for project titled “Assessment of Medical waste management culture and practices at diagnostic and research laboratories among the healthcare facilities of Pakistan”. This particular experience included project ideation from scratch, project planning, proposal writing and submission, winning research grant and execution of activities as per the approved workplan. The project duration lasted from 2021-2023.
- Worked for one year (2020-2021) as Project Assistant in Fleming Fund AMR Fellowship program, National Institute of Health Islamabad. The main duties included providing assistance to the fellow in:
- Identification and data compilation of stakeholders/partners/sentinel sites related to AMR surveillance.
- Execution of approved work plan activities.
- Reviewing of Gap Assessment tool (for capacity building of the sentinel sites), record keeping, training module development, purchase and installation of inventory management software.
- Preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
- Planning, execution and reporting of capacity building trainings.
- Document review and revision as per ISO-15189:2012
- One-year internship (worked as a lecturer of Biology) (under National Internship Program) at Govt. College for Women, Peshawar road, Rawalpindi.
- Six month’s teaching assistance-ship at Fatima Jinnah Women University.
- Two-month internship at MEAs secretariat (Multilateral Environmental Agreements secretariat), Ministry of Environment, Pakistan.
